Johnny Depp to play Gellert Grindelwald in Fantastic Beasts

By November 12, 2016Children's Literature, News

It’s just a few days now until Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them is on at the cinema and in the last few days we’ve been hearing some details about the upcoming series and the cast.

The franchise was inspired by Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a book mentioned in the Harry Potter series and it takes the wizarding world back to the 1920s and America too!

It’s already been released that the franchise will be five movies long and now given the timeline it’s looking increasingly like we’re about to find out a lot more about Gellert Grindelwald. The franchise will be set between the 1920s and 1940s, a time that Harry Potter fans will know Grindenwald was at the height of his power.

Those with a keen eye for detail will know that in 1945, Dumbledore finally came face to face with Grindenwald, defeating him and freeing the wizarding world of his tyranny. We learned a lot about him in the original book series and it looks as though this franchise will be delving further into his life and personality.

For such a big role the franchise was always going to be looking for an actor who could bring everything that the legend of Grindelwald demands, and last week it was announced that Johnny Depp will be playing Gellert Grindelwald in the franchise!

When we first heard about Fantastic Beasts, it was imagined that this would be a children’s movie featuring lots of the Harry Potter beasts, but the more time goes on the clearer it is that this is going to be another rich, involved world and another battle between good and evil…

For the greater good. We’re about to find out exactly what that means.

And don’t worry if you’re not a big movie goer, because Rowling has revealed that you can buy the Fantastic Beasts screenplay in book format too!
