The Costa Book Awards has announced the shortlist for the 2017 awards and it makes for a great reading list, with books in all categories, first novel, best novel, biography, poetry and children’s literature.
The annual prize has been running since 1971 and was originally known as the Whitbread Book Awards, until 2007 when Costa Coffee took over sponsorship of the event.
The awards are given to books that not only have high literary merit, but those that are enjoyable to read and whose aim is to convey enjoyment of reading to the widest possible audience. This makes the prize one of the best respected among readers, being much more populist than say the Booker Prize.
