Every month we start by reflecting back on the past releases of previous years with a flashback across 50 years of literature. We all know what it’s like to wait for those hot new releases, and it’s fun to look at the new releases of the past too. We’re into November now and so it’s time to take a wander through history and look back over five decades of November releases to see what readers were waiting for in Novembers past.
November 2006
Half of a Yellow Sun – Chimamanda Ngozi Adiche
Half of a Yellow Sun is the author’s debut novel and was released in hardback in early November 2006. Set in 1960s Nigeria it follows two wealthy sisters and is politically charged and beautifully written. By sheer coincidence, this is my current read too.
November 1996
Under the Tuscan Sun – Frances Mayes
Frances Mayes was already a published poet, gourmet chef and travel writer when she bought and renovated an abandoned villa in the Tuscan countryside. This is a collection of her memories, of the renovation, the area, and of course the food.
November 1986
The Hellbound Heart –Clive Barker
In traditional Barker style, The Hellbound Heart is gory, packed with horror and absolutely thrilling. It was released in November 1986, and went on to become Hellraiser, the movie a year later.
November 1976
The Great Santini – Pat Conroy
The Great Santini is a semi-autobiographical novel from iconic American author, Pat Conroy. A coming of age tale about acceptance and love, it was released in late November 1976.
November 1966
Third Girl –Agatha Christie
Third Girl features the Detective Hercule Poirot and is notable for featuring the detective from beginning to end. It was released by the Collins Crime Club in November 1966.
