If you loved the Kite Runner and you couldn’t get enough of A Thousand Splendid Suns then you can probably call yourself a true Hosseini fan, and so you’ll be as excited as we are to hear he has a brand new novel coming later this year.
An essential voice in contemporary literature, American/Afghan Hosseini has quickly become one of the best loved novelists in the world, and we’re hoping his new book will live up to his name.
Hosseini’s new book ‘Sea Prayer’ is a little different to his previous releases, for one it’s not set in Afghanistan. It’s also much shorter, and illustrated. Sea Prayer is set around the ongoing humanitarian crisis as we continue to see the biggest movement of refugees since World War II. Sea Prayer hits the shelves in September and promises to be as hard hitting and powerful as his previous novels.
The book is being released to complement a short, interactive movie on the same subject, you can watch that here:
Hosseini has proven adept at giving voice to things that have for a long time been silent to us in the West. In The Kite Runner he addressed the political changes in Afghanistan since the 1970s, the war on terror and life caught in the middle, from the perspective of an Aghan child. This debut novel was a bestseller, made into a major movie, and the books released since by the author have proven just as readable.
Hosseini said he was inspired to write this work after seeing the now infamous picture of Alan Kurdi, a 3-year-old Syrian boy whose body was photographed washed up on the shores of Turkey in 2015. This book tells of a family not dissimilar to this one and gives voice to those who have felt compelled to make treacherous journeys and take perilous risks just to get to safety.
