Despite only being on shelves for the past two weeks, Michael Wolff’s Fire and Fury: Inside the Trump Administration is already set to outsell President Trump’s own book, The Art of the Deal. Mother Jones reports that Trump’s co-author and the U.S.’ leading book sales tracking company has revealed that Fire and Fury is set to reach over 1.75 million copies sold within the short time it has been out, meanwhile The Art of the Deal, which turned 30 last year, has sold approximately 1.67 million copies.
Since Trump took office just over a year ago, he has been hotly debated by all sides of the political spectrum. Fire and Fury claims to give a behind-the-scenes look at the Trump administration. The amount of public interest in Trump has seen the book fly off the shelves and even the mega online store Amazon sold out of copies upon the book’s release.
However, some have questioned the book’s accuracy and Trump’s team has been vocal in its criticism of the book. Trump himself took to Twitter to describe the book’s author as “a total loser who made up stories in order to sell this really boring and untruthful book.” Trump’s lawyer went as far as to issue a cease-and-desist letter to the book’s publisher but this only prompted them to release the book early. Fire and Fury is highly critical of the Trump administration and claims that Trump’s former chief strategist, Steve Bannon, called Trump’s son “treasonous” for holding a meeting with Russians in Trump Tower during the 2016 election.
Book sale numbers can be difficult to get an exact figure on, especially with new books but, Patricia Eisemann, the director of publicity at Fire and Fury’s publisher Mother Holt, has stated that the company expects to sell 1.4 million copies that are currently on order, the first half of which have already been shipped. The second half will be shipped shortly. “We do expect the 1.4 [million] to be sold,” Eisemann said, adding that it’s hard to predict exactly how many physical books eventually get returned to the publisher from booksellers, unsold. “It truly varies title by title.” However, the company said it is the fastest-selling nonfiction book in the publisher’s history.
Digital copies of the book have already topped 250,000 and audiobook sales exceed 100,000. In its opening week, Fire and Fury has sold over 1 million copies and current estimates show the book will sell over 1.75 million copies before the paperback edition is released. Mother Jones reached out to the co-author of The Art of the Deal, Tony Schwartz, who stated that the book has sold 1,469,280 copies since March 31 of last year. He went on to say “I suspect it has sold another 200,000 or so in the past 8 months, but I can’t say for sure.” He confirmed that this includes all version of the book from print, digital, and audiobook.
It seems that Fire and Fury is set to sell more copies in one year than The Art of the Deal has in 30, provided public interest in Trump continues. Given that he is the current President of one of the most powerful countries on Earth, it seems likely he’ll remain a topic of interest.
