J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books are among some of the most read and most beloved books of all time. The series shot to fame in the early 2000’s and was further supported by an excellent series of film adaptations. The Harry Potter books have now reached an incredible milestone and have sold over half a billion books worldwide, with the series being translated into over 80 different languages from Latin to Mongolian.
As Pottermore reports, the 500 million in sales comprises of the seven main books and the three companion volumes across both physical and digital mediums. No doubt the quality of the books themselves have attracted many readers, but the fact the books are readily available in so many languages means non-English speaking readers are able to join in with the adventure.
The best-selling Harry Potter book is unsurprisingly the first entry, Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone. The final entry, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is the fastest-selling fiction book ever published. The audiobook versions have also been hugely popular. Narrated by the likes of Stephen Fry and Jim Dale, the audiobooks have been listened to for over 4 billion minutes since 2016 alone, that’s over seven thousand years of listening time!
A number of new editions of the books have been published over the years and have included illustrations and designs from distinct artists. The Harry Potter series was published 20 years ago in the US this year and is celebrating the anniversary in style by releasing a new publication with art from Brian Selznick. The play, Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, is coming to Broadway this Spring and an exhibition called Harry Potter: A History of Magic will open in October at the New York Historical Society. The second Fantastic Beasts film is also set to be released in November.
Despite being over 20 years old, it seems the magic of Harry Potter is stronger than ever and new generations of readers are discovering the series for themselves. Harry’s journey may be over, but it looks like the magical world Rowling has created isn’t going anywhere soon.
