Yesterday saw one of the worst residential catastrophes in living history in London, as a tower block housing 600 residents was devastated by fire as they slept, leaving scores dead and many homeless. Seventeen people are confirmed dead but there could be more than a hundred people still missing and hundreds left homeless.
It’s an unbelievable tragedy and this morning, a London bookshop put out an appeal to raise funds for the victims. Newham bookshop’s owner Vivian Archer tweeted from the bookshop’s Twitter account early this morning appealing for items for a charity raffle for the victims and the response has been phenomenal.
At our event tonight @thewansteadtap we will raffle some great items to raise cash for the Grenfell Tower residents.

Any publisher/author who would like to donate a signed book we will raffle tonight at our Mark Thomas event for Grenfell Tower residents.

We immediately retweeted the request from the For Reading Addicts Twitter page, and it’s grown and grown since then with many donations throughout the day including a SIGNED copy of Bruce Springsteen’s autobiography Born to Run.
The tickets will go on sale tonight at the bookshop in Newham where visitors will be charged £5 each for a strip of raffle tickets at the event with Mark Thomas who will be there discussing his book The Liar’s Quarter. The instant response has been overwhelming and due to this Newham Books will be selling raffle tickets until next week to raise as much as possible. All the money from the raffle will go to helping victims of the Grenfell Fire disaster.
