John Hurt 22 January 1940 – 25 January 2017 was an English actor who was renowned for his distinctively rich voice. With his first prominent role being Richard Rich in the film A Man for All Seasons he would go on to play such roles as John Merrick in The Elephant Man, Winston Smith in Nineteen Eighty-Four, Quentin Crisp in the television film The Naked Civil Servant, and the War Doctor in Doctor Who.
