2016 Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction Winner
On Wednesday 8th June the 2016 Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction Winner was announced at the Clore Ballroom, Southbank Centre in London.
The author beating off all authors to claim this prestigious title along with the £30,000 prize and a rather lovely bronze Bessie is Irish author Lisa McInerney.
Chair of Judges, Margaret Mountford, presented Lisa with her prize after her debut novel The Glorious Heresies beat 19 strong rivals from around the globe to first reach the shortlisted 6, and then finally to top spot.
Upon announcing the winner Margaret commented “After a passionate discussion around a very strong shortlist, we chose Lisa McInerney’s The Glorious Heresies, a superbly original, compassionate novel that delivers insights into the very darkest of lives through humour and skilful storytelling. A fresh new voice and a wonderful winner.”
Glorious Heresies is a delightfully foulmouthed and dark humoured take on the attitude of twentieth century Ireland towards sex and family life. Following five misfits as they deal with the fallout of a murder author Lisa does not shy away from the harsh realities of lives spent negotiating the pitfalls of the Irish underworld; bleak at times and with prostitution, drugs and alcoholism intermingled with violence and organised crime it may not be for the squeamish, yet it is that very brutality and irreverence that make this novel such a damned good read and a worthy winner.
