Come and Visit King Arthur and Merlin in Cornwall

By May 29, 2017Literature

In around 1480 William Worcestre named Tintagel as the place where King Arthur was born, and where he was conceived. By 1650 King Arthur and the castle had become an inextricably linked through a mix of local folklore and legends in literature.

The site is steeped in history since the Dark Ages, and has a great historical significance in Great Britain. It has been frequented by royalty, and a hollow rock in the shape of a foot, named King Arthur’s Footprint, was once the place for royal inauguration ceremonies.

To the west side of the Haven beach is a mysterious cave which, since the late 19th century, has been named as Merlin’s Cave. Today a face of Merlin is staring out from the cliff face.

It is truly a magical place to visit, especially for anyone who loves the Arthurian legends.

The photos below show a magnificent bronze statue of Arthur as he stands at Tintagel, over looking the sea. Named Gallos, meaning Power in the Cornish language, it is quite a breath taking object. It had to be airlifted in by helicopter to be placed there as it is so large and heavy.

If you would like to visit and explore this mythical place, you can find the details at the English Heritage Website for Tintagel Castle.

If you are not so lucky as to be able to visit the place in person you could always sate your appetite for all things Arthur by reading some of T.H. White’s Arthurian legend series- the man who inspired Walt Disney to reproduce The Sword in the Stone.
