Online sales of controversial Dr Seuss books soar

Sales of controversial Dr Seuss books have soared since the publisher decided to stop publishing the racially insensitive material.

The six withdrawn titles announced were And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street, The Cat’s Quizzer, If I Ran the Zoo, Scrambled Eggs Super, McElligot’s Pool and On Beyond Zebra!

“These books portray people in ways that are hurtful and wrong,” Dr Seuss Enterprises have said in a statement made to coincide with the anniversary of late American author and illustrator’s birthday.

Despite, or perhaps because of, the controversial images contained in the old books, the books were sold out on site such as Amazon and Barnes and Noble by the Wednesday afternoon following the announcement.

Resellers have since began listing the discontinued titles for up to $500 on eBay.

For those of us who do not want to own books with racist illustrations but still enjoy the classic children’s picture books- the rest of the Dr. Seuss collection is still available online, and sales have increased for those titles also.

Dr Seuss books now hold 9 of the top 10 slots on Amazon’s bestsellers list, starting with The Cat in the Hat at the top, followed by Green Eggs and Ham and a smaller five-book box set.

Prices are climbing since the announcement with hardcover books on Amazon climbing to ten times the price.
