Remembering Greg Iles (1960–2025)

By August 18, 2025Authors, News

Greg Iles, renowned Mississippi-based novelist and creator of the gripping Natchez Burning trilogy, passed away on August 15, 2025, at the age of 65 after a long battle with multiple myeloma, a form of blood cancer that he had courageously fought since 1996.

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, on April 8, 1960, Iles moved at a young age to Natchez, Mississippi, where he grew up and developed the passions that would shape his storytelling. Over his prolific career, he wrote 17 novels and one novella, drawing readers into the complex social, political, and racial undercurrents of the American South.

He was best known for the Penn Cage series, especially the powerful Natchez Burning trilogy (Natchez Burning, The Bone Tree, Mississippi Blood)—which explored justice, legacy, and racial reckoning in 1960s Jim Crow Mississippi. His final novel, Southern Man, released in 2024, was a political thriller he deliberately completed before undergoing a stem-cell transplant, a choice he described candidly, knowing the risks involved.

Despite near-fatal setbacks including a devastating car accident in 2011 that led to a leg amputation, Iles persevered, returning to writing with renewed vigor and resilience. He also shared his passion for music as a member of the literary rock band The Rock Bottom Remainders, playing alongside fellow writers such as Stephen King and Amy Tan.

His literary agent, Dan Conaway, remembered him as “warm, funny, fearless, and completely sui generis,” praising his combination of craftsmanship, moral urgency, and raw humanity. Fellow author Stephen King also paid tribute, writing: “Greg Iles, bestselling writer and lead guitarist of the Rock Bottom Remainders, was a hell of a writer and a hell of a player. He was also a good friend, and he’ll be missed.”

Greg Iles leaves behind his wife, Caroline, and their four children. His legacy endures in stories that dared to confront difficult histories with clarity, compassion, and courage.
