We started at 1918, bringing you the bestselling books of the last one hundred years. We’re moving along now and we’re already into the middle of the twentieth century but there’s still a long way to go.
We’re covering each year at a time and we’re well into the 1950s now and today we’re covering 1954.
In 1954, Elvis Presley recorded his first commercial record, the first mass vaccination for polio took place after the vaccine was developed in the previous year, Ellis Island closes as a point of immigration, and the important case of Brown v Board of Education makes segregation unconstitutional.
Among all that, there were plenty of books published and read too, and today we’re featuring the bestselling novels of 1954, and some that didn’t make the list but have stood the test of time.
1954 also saw the release of William Golding’s, Lord of the Flies, and J. R. R. Tolkien’s The Fellowship of the Ring
We’ll continue this series right through to 2018, keep an eye out for 1955, coming soon!
