We started at 1918, bringing you the bestselling books of the last one hundred years. We’re moving along now and we’re already into the middle of the twentieth century but there’s still a long way to go.
We’re covering each year at a time and we’re more than forty years in now with 1958 covered today!
1958 saw recession hit the USA after years of boom, as unemployment hit 7% during the same year that America’s first satellite was launched from Cape Canaveral as NASA was created. It was also the year that Microsoft developed its first computer chip, leading to the technological revolution we are living through today. It was also the year of the Munich air disaster as a plane carrying the Manchester United football team crashed. In other parts of the world, Iraq became a republic after a military coup, and Sir Edmund Hillary reached the South Pole.
Among all that, there were plenty of books published and read too, and today we’re featuring the bestselling novels of 1958, and some that didn’t make the list but have stood the test of time.
1958 also saw the release of China Achebe’s, Things Fall Apart, and Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s.
We’ll continue this series right through to 2018, keep an eye out for 1959, coming soon!
