We’re covering each year at a time and we’re more than forty years in now with 1964 covered today!
1964 saw the Civil Rights Act signed into law, causing race riots across America. The Beatles held the top five positions in the Top 40, and the first pirate radio station, Radio Caroline was launched. Also in the US the Surgeon General reported that smoking may lead to lung cancer. Around the world, Mods and Rockers fought at British seaside resorts, the Vietnam war raged on, and Malta gained independence from the UK.
Among all that, there were plenty of books published and read too, and today we’re featuring the bestselling novels of 1964, and some that didn’t make the list but have stood the test of time.
1964 also saw the release of Christopher Isherwood’s, A Single Man and Ken Kesey’s Sometimes a Great Notion.
