1984 wasn’t a great year around the world. Indria Ghandi was assassinated, the AIDS virus was identified, a famine in Ethiopia saw many artists join together under the name Band Aid and record a Christmas song for charity. In the US a shooting in a Mcdonalds restaurant leaves 20 dead, and in science DNA profiling was developed.
Among all that, there were plenty of books published and read too, and today we’re featuring the bestselling novels of 1984, and some that didn’t make the list but have stood the test of time.
1984 also saw the release of Ssandra Cisneros’s The House on Mango Street, and the English language translation of Milan Kundera’s brilliant The Unbearable Lightness of Being
