Want to Write a Novel? NaNoWriMo 2015

By October 27, 2015Authors, Literature

Have you ever wanted to write a novel? If so you might be interested to hear that November is National Novel Writing Month, an organised event where you can write a novel in a month, along with other writers from around the world. There’s help and support, the ability to track your progress and plenty of support too.

I participated in NaNoWriMo in 2012 and while my novel is still sitting there in first draft process, I’m glad I took part for the writing process and inspiration. If you’ve had that idea for a novel knocking around your head for years this may be the chance to exorcise those demons.

The idea is you write a 50,000 word novel in a month. This can be part of a longer novel, a first draft or a completed piece. It sounds daunting doesn’t it? But actually you write 1,887 words a day if you take part each day, and that doesn’t sound quite so scary.

You can sign up to participate at nanowrimo.org where you’ll find details of events in your local area, or ways to communicate with fellow writers online. You’ll also find Twitter full of writing advice, pep talks and ideas, in fact there are loads of ways to keep in touch and check everyone’s progress against your own.

It’s a lot of fun and it’s amazing how writing along with others is great for your motivation. We’re not saying that writing 50,000 words in a month is ever going to be a breeze, there’s a certain amount of commitment required but if you’re ever going to be an author, this is a great place to start! We’d also recommend checking out our So you Want to Write a Book Blog for writing advice from the experts.
