White Lotus actor to star in new adaptation of Jane Eyre

Aimee Lou Wood – a British actor known for her roles in hit shows such as The White Lotus and Sex Education – is set to star in the new TV adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s novel, Jane Eyre. The Emmy-nominated and BAFTA-winning actor and writer is also known for creating and starring in the BBC Three TV series, Film Club, and appearing in the West End productions of Uncle Vanya, and Cabaret.

In the upcoming TV adaptation of Jane Eyre, Aimee Lou Wood is set to star in the titular role. The source material, written by Charlotte Brontë in 1847, is a coming-of-age novel that follows a simple girl, Jane as she navigates life’s many struggles; her cruel and abusive Aunt Reed, and her time at the harsh Lockwood School. Spanning her growth into adulthood, the story sees Jane fall in love with her brooding boss, Mr Rochester. Rochester though has attic-shrouded secrets of his own.

The novel is often considered by many to have been ahead of its time, publishing in 1848, the work explores topics of class, sexuality, religion and feminism, with an individualistic female character at its heart.

This is, of course, not the first time Charlotte Brontë’s work has been reimagined with numerous TV, film and theatre adaptations, including at least three full-length opera versions.

The novel has also inspired other writing including notably Jean Rhys’ 1966 novel Wide Sargasso Sea, told from the viewpoint of the ‘madwoman in the attic’. In 2016, an anthology of short stories, Reader, I Married Him: Stories inspired by Jane Eyre, edited by Tracy Chevalier, was commissioned to mark the 200th anniversary of Brontë’s birth. 2027 will mark the 180th anniversary of Jane Eyre’s first publication.

The upcoming series is reportedly being produced by Working Title and is penned by Miriam Battye, a WGA Award winner for her work on Succession. Deadline report that discussions are currently underway with a UK broadcaster to join the project, however, no further details or dates have been announced.
