There is no story without a story teller and no tale without a cast of characters; so many wonderfully named characters. How do authors come up with some of these names? If it were me, everyone would be John Smith and Jane Jones ha ha.
We asked our Social Media followers to name their favourite character name and here is the top ten according to you.

Ebeneezer Scrooge
Charles Dickens was never stuck for a fascinating character name or two and Ebeneezer is your favourite.
Thursday Next
The futuristic Thursday Next is second; Jasper Fforde’s daring protagonist only missing out on top spot by a couple of votes..

Cormoran Strike
Unless you have been either hiding under a rock or completely without any internet for the last 2 years, you will know that Robert Galbraith is in fact, J.K Rowling; her PI Cormoran Strike was a very close third in our poll of character names.
Samwise Gamgee
Ahhh the supporting cast; the one whose job it is to make everyone else look good, or, in the author’s eyes, the true hero of TLotR.

Katniss Everdean
The impossible to kill protagonist of Suzanne Collins’ hit trilogy The Hunger Games comes next.
Roland Deschain
The leader Stephen King’s Dark Tower Ka Tet is sixth and although it’s not a particularly unusual name, it is one that rolls off the tongue in a pleasant way.

Lorax
Dr Seuss is another author who loves a good character name; several of his creations appeared in our poll but the Lorax is your top pick.
The Grinch
I can just imagine how happy our eighth placed character would be to discover he’d been pipped to 7th place by the Lorax.
How the Grinch Stole Christmas US
How the Grinch Stole Christmas UK

Luna Lovegood
The lovely Luna Lovegood is our penultimate pick, The Harry Potter books were bound to be in here somewhere weren’t they .
Scarlett O’Hara
How many little girls have wondered where their unusual name hailed from? Margaret Mitchell’s contrary but clever heroine is our rather delightful final pick.

What a brilliant list, we hope that your favourite has appeared somewhere in our top but if not, don’t be too disappointed, we had over 300 responses and over 200 different characters were mentioned. They were in very good company indeed.
