It seems the whole country has been gripped for weeks on Harry and Jack William’s fantastic BBC crime drama, The Missing. The show started in season one last year with the disappearance of Oliver Hughes, but it was always Tcheky Karyo playing Detective Julien Baptiste who was the star of the show.
Season two brought Baptiste back, this time on the case of a missing girl, or several in the end and it was gripping, exciting and full of twists right to the last scene. If you’ve been as gripped on the show as I have, and you’re already missing your “The Missing” fix then today we have some suggested reads for fans of the show! Get ready for a rollercoaster and more twists and turns that you could imagine.
Room – Emma Donaghue
Told from the perspective of a 5-year-old boy, Jack is a tricky narrator and you can’t always trust his word because his view of the world is very small having never left the single room he lives in with his mother. But now it’s up to Jack to tell the world about Room, can he do it?
Baby Doll –Hollie Overton
Lily was abducted from outside her high-school gates and she’s been locked away for eight years. Like The Missing, this explores the going back and the attempt to find a life long lost and the difficulties that fitting back into your old life can bring.
Sister – Rosamund Lupton
When Beatrice gets a call in the middle of Sunday lunch to say that her younger sister is missing, she boards the first flight home. However, the first thing she discovers is how little she knows of her sister’s life and the terrifying truths that now must be faced in search of her sister.
Girl Unknown – Karen Perry
Zoe Barry walks into Professor David Connolly’s office claiming he’s her father, turning his life upside down. However, things are not what they seem, and Connolly’s wife Caroline is determined to get to the bottom of the mystery.
Shutter Island – Dennis Lehane
The Missing was brilliant in that you never knew when the next twist was coming, and Shutter Island certainly meets this criteria! It’s 1956 and U.S. Marshall Teddy Daniels and his new partner, Chuck Aule have arrived at maximum-security Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane, where they’re sent to investigate the improbable disappearance of inmate Rachel Solando. All is not as it seems and madness and twists aplenty ensue.
Tell No One – Harlan Coben
Tell No One is a sophisticated thriller, centring around a wife who has gone missing, then murdered on an anniversary. Once childhood sweethearts David and Elizabeth, David become a suspect and with plenty of twists and turns we have what is a gripping thriller.
Vanished – Tim Weaver
Sam Wren leaves home one cold December day, gets on a Tube train and vanishes. No eye witnesses, no trace on the camera, six months later and Sam is still missing. Sam’s wife enlists a private detective to find her husband, but the story goes deeper than anyone could have imagined!
Sadly none of these stories come with the delightful Julien Baptiste, but they should fill your urge to be thrilled while we await a season three of The Missing!
