This 1980s Book and Cartoon is Almost Guaranteed to Freak You Out

By March 26, 2018August 10th, 2022Adaptations, Children's Literature

Raymond Briggs is best known for his 1978 graphic novel and feature length cartoon The Snowman (1982)– a sweet and nostalgic story of a boy and his snowman who comes to life one evening. The story is a little sad, but ultimately is a festive tale of friendship and appreciation of what you have.

Fans of The Snowman may be a little perturbed by another Raymond Briggs graphic novel and cartoon- When the Wind Blows (1986)– as it isn’t as childish as the Christmas book or movie. Briggs based the two characters -Jim and Hilda Bloggs-  on his own parents. The animation of When the Wind Blows is a mix of traditional and stop-motion, with the two main characters drawn, with stop-motion animated objects in the home that rarely move.

The late, great David Bowie provided the soundtrack.
