George R.R. Martin’s ‘The Ice Dragon’ Movie Adaptation Announced

George R.R. Martin may be best known for his A Song of Ice and Fire fantasy books, but the author has written a number of stories not related to the gritty world of Westeros. The Ice Dragon is one such book, a fantasy story for children originally published in 1980 in the Ace Books anthology Dragons of Light. Following the massive success of Martin’s fantasy series, and the HBO adaptation Game of Thrones, The Ice Dragon has since been released as a standalone children’s book with beautiful illustrations.

As Deadline reports, it has just been announced that The Ice Dragon will be heading to the big screen with the help of Warners Bros’. Animation Group. Martin is on board as a producer and Vince Gerardis will serve as the executive producer. The project is still very much in the early stages of development, so don’t expect it to be out anytime soon, but it will no doubt give fans of Martin something to look forward to once the final season of Game of Thrones airs next year.

Though The Ice Dragon is indeed a fantasy novel, Martin began work on it long before the idea for A Song of Ice and Fire came along and it is not set in the world of Westeros. We look forward to seeing how the movie turns out and how the dragon will differ from those seen in Game of Thrones.
