‘The Baby-Sitters Club’ is coming to Netflix!

By March 2, 2019Adaptations, News

The Baby-Sitters Club was a popular book series in the 1980s and 90s, following the adventures of a group of young women as they navigate through their teenage years.

Written by Ann M. Martin, the books hold a special place in the hearts of many millennials, and just like Sabrina the Teenage Witch, a televisual adaptation of such a beloved set of characters is high risk/reward for Netflix. It will either be fantastic (like Sabrina) or utterly terrible (like Death Note).

The original author is on board as producer so fans of the original books should feel comforted to know the characters of Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, Stacey, and Dawn should remain true to their book counterparts, although there is no word on casting as of yet.

Netflix are offering us a 10-episode reboot of the now-classic tween series. Vice president of Kids & Family at Netflix, Melissa Cobb, said in a statement:

“The themes of The Baby-Sitters Club still resonate 30 years after the original book series was released, and there has never been a more opportune time to tell an aspirational story about empowering young female entrepreneurs.”

Author Ann M. Martin told press:

“I’m amazed that there are so many passionate fans of The Baby-Sitters Club after all these years, and I’m honoured to continue to hear from readers — now grown, who have become writers, editors, teachers, librarians, filmmakers — who say that they see a reflection of themselves in the characters of Kristy and her friends. So I’m very excited about the forthcoming series on Netflix, which I hope will inspire a new generation of readers and leaders everywhere.”

Watch out for any news on when the new series is released!
