‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’ TV Series Greenlit by Amazon

By June 3, 2020Adaptations, News

Whether it’s Netflix’s adaptation of The Witcher fantasy novels, Hulu’s show based on Catch-22 or Amazon and the BBC’s excellent mini-series of Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s Good Omens, it seems books have recently become just as ripe for adaptations by streaming services as they’ve always been by Hollywood. Those of you enjoy seeing your favourite books brought to life on the big (or small) screen will be excited to learn that Amazon is working on a TV series that will follow Lisbeth Salander, one of the main characters of Stieg Larsson’s The Millennium trilogy, which began with the hit crime novel The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo.

According to Variety, the project is simply known as ‘The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo‘ and will not be a continuation of either the books or any of the numerous film adaptations. The series will instead set Lisbeth in the present day and will follow her on a new story with new settings and characters, and stories.

The actress who will portray the troubled hacker is yet to be announced and no lead writer has been confirmed. Left Bank Pictures founder and CEO Andy Harries will serve as executive producer alongside Rob Bullock. The show will be produced by Amazon and Left Bank Studio, in association with Sony Pictures Television. Harries has previously produced shows such as The Crown, Outlander and Quiz, while Bullock’s producing credits include The Night Manager and Wild at Heart.

Stieg Larsson’s original Millennium trilogy consists of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest, which he completed before his unexpected death in 2004. The series has since continued with writer David Lagercrantz, who wrote The Girl in the Spider’s Web, The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye and The Girl Who Lived Twice. Several film adaptation have been released over the years, including an American release in 2011 by David Fincher which starred Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara.

No doubt plenty of fans of the books will be eager to see if this series lives up to the source material, and we look forward to seeing which actress will take on the challenging role of Lisbeth Salander.
