A few months ago the BBC announced that they had bought the rights for the adaptation of Jessie Burton’s The Miniaturist and now filming has started and the stars are announced.

It’s announced that Romola Garai will star in the BBC adaptation of Burton’s debut novel. The star has previously been seen in The Hour, and Atonement and will play Marin, the cold sister of wealthy merchant, Johannes Brandt. Also starring are Anya Taylor-Joy, Alex Hassell, Paapa Essideu, Hayley Squires, and Emily Berrington.

Filming has now started for the production, which is being made for the BBC (image from BBC news release) by independent drama company The Forge. The novel is set in Amsterdam in 1686 and filming is to be split between the UK and Holland.

The Miniaturist was Burton’s debut novel and was published by Picador in the summer of 2014. The novel went on to be the winner of the Waterstones Book of the Year Award 2014 and the Specsavers Book of the Year 2014. Almost half a million copies have been sold to date and it spent four weeks at number 1 of the book charts.

As such this adaptation is highly anticipated, but with filming just started, you do have time to read it first if you haven’t already!
