HBO Joins BBC as Co-Producer on Upcoming ‘His Dark Materials’ Series

It was recently announced that the BBC had picked up the first season of an upcoming TV adaptation of Philip Pullman’s His Dark Materials, which is currently in production. It has now been revealed that HBO will serve as a co-producer for the show and now holds distribution rights outside of the UK.

As Variety reports, the adaptation has so far been green-light for two seasons, each of which will consist of eight episodes. The show will follow the His Dark Materials trilogy which includes The Golden Compass, The Subtle Knife, and The Amber Spyglass.

Bad Wolf and New Line Cinema are producing the show for the BBC and HBO, in association with BBC Studios Distribution and Anton Capital Entertainment. Production is currently underway in Bad Wolf’s studios in Cardiff, Wales.

The show boasts an impressive cast, including the likes of Dafne Keen, James McAvoy, Ruth Wilson, and James Cosmo. A film adaptation of the first book, The Golden Compass, was released back in 2007 but, due to a poor reception, no sequels were made. Here’s hoping the TV adaptation enjoys more success.
