Fantasy is one of the most popular genres in literature, and it’s not hard to see why. Writers like J.R.R. Tolkien, C.S. Lewis, J.K. Rowling, and Terry Pratchett have taken us on journeys and adventures we could never have imagined. We’ve celebrated Bilbo Baggins’ 111th birthday in the Shire, we’ve had snowball fights in Narnia, played Quidditch at Hogwarts, and lived upon a turtle’s back in Discworld. Fantasy allows us to escape our normal lives and live out the dreams we had as children.
In this video, you can listen to A Song of Ice and Fire’s George R.R. Martin read a passage he wrote for the book ‘The Faces of Fantasy: Photographs by Pati Perret’. In it he perfectly encapsulates why the fantasy genre has thrived for so long and why it will continue to do so for many years to come. Take it away, George.
