We recently reported the news that Madeline Miller’s hit book Circe was being optioned for a TV adaptation, and it has now been announced that HBO has managed to secure the rights and intends to have it debut on its upcoming streaming service HBO Max, which is slated to launch in the Spring of 2020.
As Deadline reports, there appears to have been stiff competition over the rights to Circe, but HBO ultimately won out. 8 episodes have been ordered and the project has secured the writers David Jaffa and Amanda Silver, who previously worked on Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Jurassic World. The two will both write and produce the series, which will tell the tale of Circe, a minor Greek deity who transforms from a shy and vulnerable Goddess to a lethal and strong witch.

I’ve been a longtime fan of Rick and Amanda’s work and their ability to simultaneously build epic imaginative worlds while creating emotional dynamic characters. In partnership with Peter Chernin and Jenno Topping, we have the dream team to bring Circe to life.”
Circe is Madeline Miller’s second book after The Song of Achilles. It received acclaim from both critics and readers alike and spent 16 weeks on The New York Times bestseller list, selling over half a million copies in the US alone. It was shortlisted for the 2019 Women’s Prize for Fiction and was the Winner of the 2019 Indie Choice Award. It has since been translated in 22 different languages.
