You Can Legally Watch the First Episode of HBO’s ‘Lovecraft Country’ for Free on YouTube (If You’re in the US)

By August 25, 2020Adaptations, News

Earlier this year, we reported the news that HBO was making a TV adaptation of Matt Ruff’s Lovecraftian fantasy horror novel Lovecraft Country, which tells the story of a group of African Americans traveling across the States during the segregated 1950s. While the book sees our protagonists encountering many otherworldly horrors, the true horror is the racism they must contend with along the way. The first episode recently aired and has received a strong response from both viewers and critics. If you’re in the US and you missed it, then you’re in luck, as the entire episode has been officially uploaded to YouTube for you to watch.

Unfortunately, the video is only available to viewers in the United States, but those with a VPN shouldn’t have trouble getting around that. Inspired by the works of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft, Lovecraft Country sees our heroes contending with otherworldly, cosmic horrors, against the backdrop of the all too real realities of racism in Jim Crow’s America.

The book received rave reviews upon its publication and, so far, it looks like the show is living up to the quality of the source material. The uploaded video gives (some) viewers a chance to check out the first episode and get hooked. Here’s hoping HBO eventually decides to let the rest of the world check it out for free. If you decide you want to visit Lovecraft Country, then know the second episode is set to air later this week on the 23rd August.
