We started at 1918, bringing you the bestselling books of the last one hundred years. We’re moving along now and we’re into the 1960s and almost half way through this series.
We’re covering each year at a time and we’re more than forty years in now with 1966 covered today!
1966 saw the world’s first vertical Jump Jet ‘The Harrier’ introduced, while technological advances saw the English Channel hovercraft service introduced. Wales saw catastrophe as the Aberfan disaster killed 144, mainly schoolchildren and their teachers. In the US a subway strike brought New York to its knees, while Charles Whitman killed 14 on a shooting spree. Across the world China’s Cultural Revolution began, and protests against the Vietnam War continued with fervor.
Among all that, there were plenty of books published and read too, and today we’re featuring the bestselling novels of 1966, and some that didn’t make the list but have stood the test of time.
1966 also saw the release of Jean Rhys’ The Wide Sargasso Sea
We’ll continue this series right through to 2018, keep an eye out for 1967, coming soon!
